Yang Jie, alumni of Rennes School of Business, named as head of the number one Chinese mobile phone company

Yang Jie, president of China Telecom and alumni of Rennes School of Business, has just been promoted to Chief Executive Officer of China Mobile Communications Group Co Ltd., the leading mobile phone operator in the world, with almost a billion subscribers. He graduated in 2008 from Rennes School of Business.

China Mobile Communications Group Co. Ltd., the world’s largest telecommunications operator in terms of mobile phone subscribers, announced on Monday that it has appointed Yang Jie as its new CEO. Yang – who will replace Shang Bing – was previously CEO of China Telecom, the country’s third-largest operator in terms of mobile phone subscribers and a direct competitor of China Mobile. Today China Mobile holds 60% of the market share with 916 million clients.

A telecommunications engineer, Yang Jie graduated from the University of Applied Sciences in Bejing, China in 1984. It was in 2008 that he obtained his Executive Doctorate of Business Administration from Rennes School of Business.

Yang has had a career in the industry. In 2006, he became Vice-President of China Telecom. Then in 2011, he was promoted to President, the youngest of the company’s history. Three years later, he became Chairman of the Board.

Yang Jie, 56, will replace 63-year-old Shang Bing. China Mobile appointed Yang Jie with the aim of accelerating alliances for 5G between the country’s top three telecommunications companies – China Mobile, China Telecom and China Unicom. Ensuring the smooth and efficient deployment of 5G networks in the country is indeed a top priority for the Chinese government.
