Learning differently through real-world experience
Learning Expeditions enable Rennes School of Business students to apply their knowledge to real-world business challenges. Working in teams, they explore a topic related to their programme, meet professionals, attend events and conduct their own field research.
An experience that places autonomy, curiosity and learning by doing at the heart of the learning process.
The Learning Expedition (LEX) is an experiential learning module that encourages students to step beyond the traditional classroom setting and engage with the professional world.
Working in teams, students tackle a real-world challenge and develop their own approach to exploration. Company visits, conferences, professional events, meetings with experts, interviews and field observations can all contribute to their thinking.
The aim is to combine these experiences with their academic knowledge to better understand how businesses are changing and develop practical recommendations.
Students take an active role in their project: they take initiative, organise their work and receive guidance from their professor throughout the different stages of their Learning Expedition.
Students engage with their professional environment through companies, experts, conferences, events and other key players in their sector. They gather information and compare their initial ideas with real-world insights.
The observations and insights gathered are complemented by academic and professional research. Students learn to draw on different sources, take a step back and develop a well-supported analysis.
Based on their research, teams identify key insights and develop practical recommendations. They then learn to present their approach, explain their choices and defend their proposals.
Each year, the Learning Expeditions focus on a common theme, which is then adapted to the key issues and areas of expertise of each programme.
For the 2026-2027 academic year, the theme is: “Shaping the Future: How Should Businesses Adapt to Emerging Megatrends by 2030?”
Artificial intelligence, climate transition, demographic shifts, digital sovereignty, deglobalisation, biotechnology, the future of work…
Students choose an angle related to their programme and explore how a company or sector can adapt to these major transformations over the coming years.
Working in teams, students define their topic, organise their project and choose the most relevant field experiences: meetings, visits, conferences or interviews. They work independently, with guidance from their professor.
The project progresses through several key stages: defining the topic, conducting research and fieldwork, giving an interim poster presentation and, finally, presenting the completed project. Each stage helps students develop their analysis and refine their recommendations.
The LEX enables students to develop essential skills in project management, teamwork, initiative, analysis and professional communication.
By managing their project independently and engaging with professionals, students also learn to take responsibility and defend their ideas.
The Learning Expedition concludes with LEX Vibes Day, a key event during which teams present their projects, findings and recommendations.
The day provides an opportunity to showcase students’ work and share what they have learnt from the experience with fellow students, professors and invited participants. A pedagogical competition also highlights the projects developed throughout the Learning Expedition.
