Alumni profile: Franck Zal wins the 2026 European Inventor Award

A graduate of the Executive MBA programme at Rennes School of Business, biologist and entrepreneur Franck Zal has won the 2026 European Inventor Award in the ‘SMEs’ category. This award, presented by the European Patent Office, recognises an innovation that helps to improve the preservation of organs intended for transplantation.

Innovation for better health

As founder of the biotechnology company Hemarina, Franck Zal has developed a universal oxygen carrier derived from the haemoglobin of a marine worm (Arenicola marina). This technology enables oxygen to be supplied to organs and tissues during storage and transport, thereby extending their shelf life prior to transplantation. It is already in use in the field of transplantation and is also being researched for other medical applications.
